Declaration of Major

All degree seeking students must declare their major by March 1 of their sophomore year, or before earning 56 hours and becoming juniors. Students transferring in with sophomore, junior or senior standing must declare a major prior to registration for their third semester at Hiram College. Students not declared in time for priority registration will have a hold blocking registration.

Advising is a key component of major declaration and Hiram Connect major declaration requirement. Therefore, after discussing their interest in a particular major with a faculty member in the program, students can officially declare their major in the following manner:

  1. The first and most important step of the process is for students to share with their prospective advisor, in a formal reflection, their interests, aspirations, prior preparation, worries, sense of purpose, the degree of understanding of the field they are choosing to enter, and their sense of possibilities that this field provides completing the Connect requirement and allowing for the signatures of their advisor and school director.
  2. After completing the Connect requirement, the student will download the Major/Advisor Declaration form from Registrar Forms.
  3. Submit complete Declaration of Major/Advisor form with all required signatures to the registrar's office.

Declaration of Minor

Minors are academic programs that explore an area smaller than a major. Although they are not required by most major programs, they can enhance the educational journey for a student. Advising is a key component of minor declaration. Therefore, after discussing their interest in a particular minor with a faculty member in the program, students can officially declare their minor in the following manner:

  1. After speaking with an advisor, the student will download the Minor/Advisor Declaration form from Registrar Forms and receive the signatures of their advisor and school director.
  2. Submit complete Declaration of Minor/Advisor form with all required signatures to the registrar's office.
