Introduction

Hiram’s international studies program gives students an in-depth understanding of our global society, allowing them to devise solutions to urgent challenges through advocacy, diplomacy, defense, and development work. Students who are in the international studies program examine contemporary global issues and have an opportunity to focus their study on regions or topics of international interest.

Courses in International Studies span several subject areas; additional INTL courses will be approved during the academic year.

INTL 21500:  APPROACH THEMES REG:EW,CA:  4 Hour(s)  

INTERNATIONAL STUDIES: APPROACHES, THEMES, & REGIONS:CA,EW ~ This course provides an in-depth overview of the interdisciplinary field of international studies methodologically, thematically, and empirically. Students will learn about the analytical utility of various disciplines including history, geography, anthropology, economics, and political science for understanding and explaining global-related phenomena. In addition, the course will explore numerous global issues/themes empirically grounded in various regions. These may include examples such as the following: democracy and representation in Europe, development and poverty in Latin America, environmental challenges and climate change in South Asia, civil war and terrorism in the Middle East, and development and human migration in sub-Saharan Africa. The overall goal of this class is to make students better-informed global citizens and analytically-rigorous scholars of this complex, rich, and changing world. This course is required for the international studies major.

SEMINAR ~

INTL 48000:  SENIOR SEMINAR:  4 Hour(s)  

SENIOR SEMINAR ~ This independent study course will consist of finalizing a research topic and completing the project, which will be approached from two different disciplinary perspectives and eventually result in interdisciplinary synthesis. The capstone will be jointly supervised by two faculty members chosen by the student, at least one of whom must be member of the international studies major committee. The International Studies Capstone course will include a mini-seminar of graduating international studies seniors meeting regularly, and led by a select member of the international studies major committee. This mini-seminar will allow the graduating seniors to share and discuss progress on their capstone projects, including particular intellectual challenges and/or findings in their capstone research.

INTL 48100:  INDEPENDENT REASEARCH/CAPSTONE:  1-4 Hour(s)
